About Kieran Marken - Clinical Hypnotherapist

My personal introduction to hypnosis

Years ago I began my journey into the world of hypnosis through personal interest and curiosity and quickly found a world of potential that inspired me to investigate the field further. I was initially self taught and my early experiences included inducing anaesthesia for my daughter after she had a tooth pulled, helping a family member overcome an addiction to sugar, putting a family friend into a trance in order to have a wound cleaned after an accident and watching improved communication develop between two members of my own family after one hypnosis session with one of them.

These positive and powerful early results convinced me that hypnosis has a very significant role to play in the way that people can understand their own potential and reclaim confidence in themselves as well as make meaningful changes in their own lives. This inspired me to seek formal training in order to develop my knowledge and further my skills. I also developed a desire to meet like minded people and to work with a broader range of people and issues. I didn't know at the time just how rich and diverse this field would be and the degree I would enjoy meeting and working with both the clients and collegues with whom I now work.

Qualifications

I completed a Certifivcate IV in Clinical Hypnotherapy at The Academy of Hypnotic Science in Melbourne. I began clinical practice during the certificate year and decided to develop my knowledge further by completing a Diploma in Clinical Hypnotherapy and Ericksonian Psychotherapy in Brisbane with the well known hypnotist David Kennedy. Some of the work I submitted while achieving the Diploma has now been included as teaching material for other students in the course. I am a member of The Professional Clinical Hypnotherapists of Australia (PCHA) and I continue with ongoing personal investigation into theory, practice and techniques, new and old, along side my clinical practice and regular public speaking about clinical hypnotherapy.

My personal philosophy about the use of hypnosis

In broad terms, the main thing that has always appealed most to me about hypnosis as a tool for personal growth and change is that it is completely non-invasive and requires no special equipment or specific cultural framework within which to be effective. I see it as an approach that evokes powerful and fundamental aspects of human nature and potential regardless of the social, religious or cultural backgrounds of the therapist or the client. This means that, in its essence, it is a true humanistic modality because it is available to everyone.

On a day to day basis I take a very practical approach to therapy. Often the people who come to se me just want to change some specific aspect of themselves without necessarily embarking on a journey of complete self discovery. All aspects of ourselves are interwoven but it is still possible to get over the hurdle that is in front of us now knowing that we can address the others up ahead when we get there. I believe that sometimes a small change in the right direction is just as valuable as a life changing revelation.

People continually surprise me with the things they achieve for themselves through hypnosis. This is one of the most wonderful aspects of this field. I am reminded regularly, by the things my clients achieve, that we really only know very little about the things of which the human mind is capable. My work in hypnosis gives me the opportunity on a daily basis to have my own expextations broadened.

A couple of extra personal details.

I live in the quiet yet expanding southeast suburbs of Melbourne out in the Berwick direction with my loving wife and three teenage kids. In my spare time, apart from reading old books on hypnosis, I enjoy photography, amateur astronomy and a little guitar. In my past I have worked in roles ranging from factory-hand to workshop supervisor as well as spending time in graphic design and computer work. After a couple of decades in various other roles hypnotherapy has become the field in which I feel at home.
