Sometimes the name we give to a feeling is actually just the nearest label that comes to mind. Some feelings don't have names yet. |
Extended information about hypnosis for the relief of emotional pressure.
Hypnosis is a very useful way to understand ourselves better. Sometimes when clients come to see me they have a very clear idea about what it is that they would like to address. At other times though the cause is not quite so obvious. A person might say "Life is good, I love my partner, they love me, work is great, we've got the finances under control and yet there is something making me sad." Many times the person has given the matter a lot of thought and just can not identify the root of their feelings.
Using hypnotherapy as well as some general counselling techniques it is often possible for clients to come to a better understanding of their own motivations and feelings as well as the way these factors influence our experience of life. It is not uncommon, after this kind of therapy, for a client to say something like "Wow, I didn't know I felt that way" or "I didn't know that was bothering me." Often this simple realisation about the root of the problem is the beginning of bigger and better changes that permeate throughout the person's life.
So where do these pressures come from?
We must remember that everyone is individual and therefore recognise the need to expect the unexpected but at the same time there are a number of themes that present themselves more often than others. Re-occuring themes that cause emotional pressure include :
- Impressions formed in childhood - Not everything starts in childhood but many things do. Sometimes there are specific events including trauma which make deep and lasting impressions on the vulnerable little one. Keep in mind though that childhood impressions don't need to be traumatic in order to be influential later in life. Sometimes things such as the perceived expectations of our parents or our understanding of where we fit into the world at school can be very powerful sources of emotional pressure later in life.
Hypnosis is a very effective tool for addressing past issues and resolving the emotional pressure that is being created by them now. Sometimes the client knows what the problem is and sometimes hypnosis is used to uncover the cause of the problem. Sometimes it is just a matter of looking at a seemingly insignifacant event in a new way.
- Old personal belief systems that no longer apply - At various times during our lives we form beliefs about ourselves and the world around us based on our experinece. We then move forward in our lives with those beliefs as the basis for making important decisions. Life continually changes around us and every now and then it is useful to stop and reconsider some of the things we believe. The realisation that our personal outlook doesn't seem to fit our circumstances any more is often, in itself, a cause of emotional stress. Sometimes we are not aware that our beliefs don't really fit our world any more and this lack of awareness becomes the cause of the pain.
Hypnosis is generally used in these instances as a tool for self discovery. Our belief systems become such a part of who we are that often we don't even know that we live by them. Therefore it is often revealing and satisfying to utilise hypnosis to identify and reconsider the thought patterns that are causing the pressure.
- The general pressures of a busy life - Life can get busy at times and it is common for people to be so busy meeting the demands of everyone else; spouse, kids, parents, friends and work that they forget about there own needs. Sometimes emotional pressure is a signal from within that you need to take a little time to address some of your own needs. In fact the best way to help other people is to be at your best and part of being your best is to ensure that you are looking after yourself.
Hypnosis itself can be very relaxing and sometimes this time-out can be a good start to re-gathering your internal resources and gearing up to tackle the current pressures of life. Of course there is always the opportunity for self discovery with hyppnosis and so sometimes its nice to get a new perspective on yourself and what you would like to be getting out of life.
- Lifestyle, habit and diet - Sometimes people try to deal with the stress of life by developing certain habits and lifestyle options that actually end up creating more pressure by affecting moods in a negative way and depleting the body's functioning. Not many people like to hear it but if you eat junk food, smoke, drink alcohol regularly and barely ever move your body then it is going to be difficult to feel good.
Hypnosis is well know as a tool for helping people to change habits and adjust their behaviour. When diet and lifestyle are the major factors behind the problem I often suggest that clients visit a local naturopath for some advice on nutrition and vitamins. The hypnosis can then be used as an adjunct to actual practical changes in the persons lifestyle.
