Extended information about hypnosis and stopping smoking.
Hypnosis is a very helpful tool when it comes to stopping smoking. Most people who see me to stop smoking only need one session to do so. Every now and then a client needs a second session for a bit of re-inforcement but this is the exception rather than the rule.
What is it like to stop smoking with hypnosis?
Well there are some small differences from client to client due to individual personality traits but for the most part its an enjoyable and satisfying experience. There are usually no cravings and no substitutions of food or other negative habits. Usually the hardest part is getting used to the new energy, extra time and money that you save. Most of the people who come to see me to stop smoking get my phone number from a friend or colleague who passed it on to them after they stopped smoking.
How does it work?
Smoking is a habit and like all other habits, once you teach yourself how to do them, the subconscious part of your mind takes on the role of managing the habit for you. As an example, when you first learnt to drive a car you had to think a lot about which hand goes where, which foot goes to which pedal, do you turn the key, let out the clutch or release the hanbrake fist. It starts off being confusing and difficult.
Now being able to drive safely is important for your well being and a lot of the elements are repetitive. The subconscious mind, therefore, comes onto the scene and says "OK if your going to continually do this then I'll take over for you." Eventually you can listen to the radio, talk to a friend and think about something else...all while driving the car. All the abilities required to drive the car have become subconscious processes.
Smoking is similar. You teach yourself to smoke. You learn which end goes in your mouth. You learn how to light it, how to hold it and how to inhale. Well the subconscious mind says "OK, if you're going to keep doing this over and over again then I'll take it over for you." It then becomes a habit and you can do lots of other things while smoking.
The thing about habits is that they are managed by your subconscious mind. That is why it is difficult to break habits by trying to think your way out of them. Thinking is a conscious process yet the habit is subconscious. Every person who smokes knows that its dangerous and a waste of money and yet that knowledge is often still not enough to make the change actually happen.
This is where hypnosis comes in. I use hypnotic techniques to activate and co-ordinate the subconscious processes in an intentional manner. It is effective because we are working with the part of the mind that is managing the habit. Its difficult to do this on your own because the subconscious mind is also the part of the mind that manages daydreams and the like and therefore if you try to work subconsciously on your own there is a tendency to lose focus and start thinking about whatever comes into the mind.
In short, hypnosis is the process where one person (The Hypnotist) helps to guide the creative part of another person's (The Client's) subconscious mind to achieve a positive outcome. The results are generally enjoyable and very effective.
